Presentation Outline

How to craft the nervous systems of our eNetworked world to enable seamless evolution through challenging times and adaptation not only to meet the unexpected and survive it, but thrive on it? Wireless networks and nano-machines already blend the virtual and physical world in creative ways merging single devices / departments / enterprises into a larger and more complex infrastructure animating industrial, artistic, learning, scientific and other Cyber-Physical Ecosystems (CPE). Using the latest knowledge of complexity science a methodological framework for evolving large scale CPE will be introduced. We will unravel the ‘eNetwork DNA’ and put it to work similarly to how DNA molds the fundamental cells in natural systems such that they can evolve to accommodate gradual or abrupt change in the environment or internal operating conditions. Various applications will be presented among which: blackout-free electricity generation and distribution, optimization of energy consumption, disaster response through deployment of holistic security ecosystems, pandemic mitigation, networked transportation and manufacturing, environmental monitoring and sustainability assessment.

Biography of the speaker

Professor Mihaela Ulieru is Director of the Canada Foundation for Innovation sponsored Adaptive Risk Management Lab at the University of New Brunswick and President of the IMPACT Institute for the Digital Economy capitalizing on her achievements as Canada Research Chair in eSociety to make information communication technologies an integrated component of policy making targeting a safe, sustainable and innovation-driven world. In 2007 she was appointed to the Science, Technology and Innovation Council of Canada by the Minister of Industry, to advise the government and provide foresight on innovation issues related to the ICT impact on Canada's economic development and social well-being against international standards of excellence.
She leads multi-million dollar projects in the area of emergent engineering with application to the management and engineering of complex situations She has held and holds appointments on a plethora of international S&T advisory boards and review panels, among which are the Science and Engineering Research Council of Singapore, the Scientific Council of the EU Proactive Initiative on Pervasive Adaptation (PERADA) and the EU Network of Excellence in Intelligent Manufacturing (IPROMS), the NSF Electrical Engineering and Cyber-Systems and several EU FP7 expert panels.
Professor Ulieru has an MSc in Dynamical Systems and Controls from Politehnica University in Bucuresti, Romania and a PhD in Intelligent Diagnostics from Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany (1995). She was postdoctoral fellow in the Intelligent Robotics and Manufacturing Group at Simon Fraser University, Canada (1996-1998) and on Faculty at Brunel University in London, UK and at the University of Calgary in Canada where she held the Junior Nortel Chair in Intelligent Manufacturing and founded the Emergent Information Systems Lab.  In 2010 she was appointed Expert in Innovation Strategy at the Executive Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation of Romania, and as Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University, in Ottawa.
